George Watt ' 73, President and CEO of the Alumni Association,
just issued the following announcement:
"This email is being sent to Trustees and Class and Chapter Presidents
for further dissemination.
Monday I attended the Passage of Command in Alumni Hall at which General
Michael Hagee '68 relieved General James Jones and became the 33rd Commandant
of the U.S. Marine Corps.
There were a couple of things that stood out for me at this time-honored
ceremony. First was the attendance by so many of our DoD leadership. SecDef
was particularly effusive in his praise of General Jones and General Hagee.
That a non-Naval Academy graduate had this ceremony at the Naval Academy
is testimony to the high regard that General Jones has for the Academy
and is typical of the support he gave the Academy during his very successful
tour as the 32nd Commandant. Additionally, General Jones had the well-deserved
reputation of bringing teamwork to the Navy-Marine Corps team through
his personal commitment of partnership with CNO Vern Clark. The presence
of these two Marines, along with the "President's Own" made a huge impression
on the many midshipmen in the audience.
Congratulations to our new Commandant from the Class of 1968 and best
wishes to General Jones, as he is the first Commandant in more than 40
years not to retire from the position, and will become the first Marine
to assume duties as the commander, U.S. European Command and NATO's supreme
allied commander, Europe."

Go Navy! Go USMC!

I would second George's comments and congratulations to these two fine Marine Officers and patriots. I take
note of the fact that General Jones was reassigned to head the European Theatre instead of retiring. It's a
clear indication to me that the Pentagon and the White House wanted a tried and tested senior officer in that
area of the world as the war drums are increasing in intensity.
GO NAVY!! BEAT ARMY!!!
Very Respectfully,
