Subj: Spring 2004 USNA Foundation (A&S) Trustees
Meeting **** The Spring meeting of the USNA Foundation Trustees (Athletics & Scholarships) was held on 24 April 2004. A&S was begun in the 1940s and is a group of loyal alumni and supporters who contribute their time and resources to promote the athletic programs at USNA, as well to provide worthy candidates with prep school scholarships. I wanted to give alumni on my distribution list the benefit of the talks given by the two guest speakers: Coach Paul Johnson (Football) and Chet Gladchuk (Athletic Director).
PAUL JOHNSON – HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
· Discussed recently completed Spring practices and upcoming Blue-Gold Scrimmage held later that day at the stadium · Very good recruiting year so far, with about 23 of original 35 NAPS recruits expected to report to USNA as Plebes this June 30 · Said what a privilege it was this past year to coach at Navy and how pleased he was with the improvement of the team · Cited the honor of winning the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy and the recent presentation by President Bush at the White House on 19 April
CHET GLADCHUK – ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
· Thanked Trustees for the Foundation scholarship support of great student athletes to our affiliated schools. · Great recruiting program this year in all sports, and it will only get better. · “I fully support the high academic standards that we demand from our athletes” · Football drives (funds) our entire athletic program; it generates the funds to cover the other 29 varsity sports; that’s why a first-rate stadium is critical: it sets the tone for our whole program. · We’re working with the City of Annapolis to satisfy their concerns about the stadium and maintain our good community relationship with them. · Reviewed plans for ongoing Phase III of the stadium renovation, scheduled for completion in September of this year. · Chet ended his remarks with: “Thanks again to the Trustees for their wonderful support and commitment to Navy athletics.”
