George Watt ' 73, President and CEO of the Alumni Association,
just issued the following announcement:
The four Naval Academy Alumni Association Distinguished Graduates for
2003 are:
Ambassador William H. G. FitzGerald, USNA Class of 1931.
Former Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland; founder and chairman of
the board of the North American Housing Corporation; creator of the W.H.G.
FitzGerald Scholarship Fund providing USNA scholars to attend Oxford University
for two years of study; Member, United States Naval Academy Foundation
Board of Directors; Co-chairman of the Alumni Association-Foundation Joint
Investment Committee. Trustee Emeritus, Naval Academy Foundation. Life
Member, USNA Alumni Association.
Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey, USN (Ret.), Class of 1935.
World War II submariner; Highly decorated including Medal
of Honor; Famed author for his narrative aboard the USS BARB called 'Thunder
Below!'; Long time supporter of Athletic Excellence at USNA. Life Member,
USNA Alumni Association.
Rear Admiral Robert W. McNitt, USN (Ret.), Class of 1938.
Highly decorated submariner awarded for valorous duty during
five successful submarine war patrols during World War II; Former Superintendent
of the Naval Post Graduate School and acclaimed author on the definitive
history "Sailing at the U.S. Naval Academy;" Former USNA Dean of Admissions.
Former President of USNA Alumni Association. Trustee, Naval Academy Foundation.
Life Member, USNA Alumni Association.
Vice Admiral William D. Houser, USN (Ret.), Class of 1942.
35-year naval career; naval aviator; veteran
of World War II and Korea; Former Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare);
A staunch supporter in memorializing the Battle of Midway and preserving
the Midway Islands. Trustee, Naval Academy Foundation. Life Member, USNA
Alumni Association.
The selection was made by the Distinguished Graduate
Award Committee, chaired by Admiral Kinnaird McKee, USNA '51. Members
include: VADM William L. Read, USN (Ret.) '49; Mr. John Nolan '50; GEN
Robert Herres, USAF (Ret.) '54; VADM George W. Davis, Jr., USN (Ret.)
'55; Mr. Christian Poindexter '60; ADM Charles S. Abbot, USN (Ret.) '66;
CAPT George P. Watt, Jr., USNR (Ret.) '73; and CAPT James S. Grant, USN
'80.
These four now join the fifteen previous recipients of this prestigious
recognition by their alma mater and Alumni Association. Our newest members
will be formally recognized in ceremonies at the United States Naval Academy.
We will inform you as soon as the 2003 date is set.

all of you who participated in this year's selection process through your
many nominations. This award continues to not only distinguish a select
few Naval Academy graduates, but our institution as well. Your support
in making it an important part of the Alumni Association partnership with
