The Chairman of the USNA Alumni Association, ADM Carlisle A. H. Trost, USN (Ret.) ’53 has appointed a Nominating Committee to recommend a slate of candidates to fill pending vacancies of certain Trustees who will complete their three-year term in the Spring 2005.  The Committee must complete its work by November 15, 2004 by recommending a slate for pending vacancies to the Board of Trustees for approval at its upcoming December 2004 meeting.

The slate for pending vacancies will then be voted on by the membership in the Spring 2005 elections.  The following three Trustee positions will be voted on:

Vice Chair; Eastern Region Trustee; and, Central Region Trustee.  All positions will be for a three year term.  Of these three positions, only the Eastern Region Trustee is ineligible to serve an additional term (having already served two terms).  I, as Central Region Trustee, have decided to run for a second term.

All nominations must be received by the Nominating Committee no later than early November 2004 for its consideration.  I suggest that you consult the By Laws and Operating Manual for specific procedures if you wish to nominate an alumnus for any or all of these positions. These documents are readily found on the Association’s web site, www.usna.com.  You may also feel free to contact me for any additional help or guidance in this regard.

Guidance provided to the Nominating Committee in ADM Trost’s appointment letter included the following:

“In submitting the Slate of Nominees for the Board of Trustees, the Nominating Committee is encouraged to offer a reasonable opportunity for increased representation on the Board from the younger classes. To this end, a sufficient number of outstanding candidates from the younger classes should be considered, keeping in mind that the proper balance of nationally distinguished alumni is important. It is important that candidates have demonstrated prior service to and participation with the Association through their local chapters, classes, or national organization and / or who best serve the Association as a result of their expertise, experience, special knowledge or capability.”

“I further point out that it is necessary to nominate only those who are members of the Naval Academy Alumni Association and who are willing to serve. It is an important consideration to determine if one’s prospective duties, jobs or profession during the tenure in office will permit the individual to devote a reasonable amount of service and financial commitment to the organization. This includes reasonable expectancy of attendance at the spring and fall meetings of the Board of Trustees, as well as setting an example as a donor corresponding to the Trustee’s ability to contribute financially.”

The members of the Nominating Committee are:

ADM Leighton W. Smith, Jr., USN (Ret.) ’62 (Chairman); CAPT Robert G. Stevenson, USN (Ret.) ’60; RADM John W. Adams, USN (Ret.) ’58; Rebecca C. Craig ’80; Thomas O. Wagner II ’97; Col John W. Ripley, USMC (Ret.) ’62; ADM C. Stevenson Abbot, USN (Ret.) ’66.

I would urge any of you who wish to either run, or to nominate an alumnus for one of these positions, to do so.  Remember that nominations must be received by the Nominating Committee no later than early November 2004.  Also note that Regional Trustees must reside in their geographic region and are voted on only by alumni who also reside in that geographic region.
