 Dear Central Region Alumni:

As I pointed out in my other Newsletters, my duty to communicate with you is made clear by the Alumni Association Bylaws/Operating Manual:  “…being a Trustee of the Association involves serious responsibility...Of utmost importance is the responsibility to communicate effectively in explaining to our individual constituencies about issues, initiatives and activities of the Association.”

The following are highlights of the presentation made by the Superintendent, VADM Rod Rempt ‘66, to the BOT on Thursday, May 4, 2006 .  These remarks are wide ranging, i.e., covering diverse topics of activities and events currently underway or planned at USNA.  I summarize his report below.

SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT

·        Stressed the USNA mission and discussed each element and programs in place or underway to support the mission:

o       All related to building combat leaders

o       Increased Mid’n participation in leadership development

o       Created an Officer Development Division that focuses on leadership, character, values, honor, ethics, and spirituality

o       Increased Mid’n ownership of honor system and a focus on education

·        130 graduate education scholarships awarded in 2005 and 4 Rhodes scholars

·        At request of Navy/Marine Corps will expand languages and regional studies

·        Year-long academic review nearing completion

·        Athletic programs doing very well:

o       66 % varsity athletic win record

o       14 to 8 N Star record over Army

o       Excellent club sports record

o       Continuing review of physical education program and club/varsity sports program mix

·        Service selection this year as follows:

o       SWO 235; SWO Nuke 34; Submarine 89; Air Pilot 274; Air NFO 74; Marine Corps 208; Seals 21; Special Ops 15; Restricted line 26; Medical Corps 10; USAF 3; USA 1

·        Continues to be concerned about sexual harassment, honor, and alcohol issues; discussed each and presented statistics—obviously much effort/emphasis is being given to these areas

o       New blood alcohol (breathalyzer) procedures will begin next week, and an active program of checking apparently intoxicated Mids will begin: Readings of 0.08 to 0.15 will result in disciplinary action—readings greater than 0.15 might result in expulsion

·        Much facilities work has been completed, and much continues:

o       Chauvenet and Michelson Halls complete; Levy Center and Chapel are used extensively now

o       Next up on rehab is Museum and King Hall (Mess Hall to us older coots)

o       Construction begun on Wesley Brown field house next to 7th wing; will have full size indoor football field

·        Ocean sailing program vastly expanded from 250 mids a few years ago to about 1300 now

·        Thanked all alumni for their interest and support

·        How can you help?:

o       Keep informed of USNA activities

o       Support the Foundation

o       Get involved with the Midshipmen

o       Spread good news

o       Support overseas shipmates

o       Support the USNA leadership
