September 12, 2007 Subj: 2007 Nominating Committee & Deadlines Refer to: Central Region Letter 08-07 ********* Dear Central Region Alumni:
As I pointed out in my other Newsletters, my duty to communicate with you is made clear by the Alumni Association Bylaws/Operating Manual: “…being a Trustee of the Association involves serious responsibility...Of utmost importance is the responsibility to communicate effectively in explaining to our individual constituencies about issues, initiatives and activities of the Association.”
There has been widespread information on the upcoming Nominating Committee deliberations, including a call for nominations in Shipmate. Nevertheless, I want to be sure that the word gets out and am issuing this informational Newsletter. Three positions are coming up for vote at an election to be held early next year: Vice Chair, Eastern Region Trustee, and Central Region Trustee (my position). Central Region Association members may nominate candidates for the Vice Chair and Central Region Trustee positions. Such nominations need to be in the hands of the Nominating Committee by October 19, 2007. Submissions should include detailed information of the candidate’s service to and participation with the Alumni Association (class organization, chapter participation, committee work, Blue and Gold affiliation, etc.). Candidates for nomination must be members of good standing and be willing to serve. Send nominations to the Nominating Committee, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, 247 King George Street, Annapolis, MD 21402-5068, again to be received no later than 19 October 2007. To date I am aware of only one individual who has declared candidacy for the Central Region Trustee seat which I must vacate in May 2007 because of term limits. That person is Captain Bob Jones, USN (Ret.) ’64, from the Austin Chapter. Bob is a solid candidate who has been very active in establishing and growing the Austin Chapter, and for several years attending Board meetings in Annapolis at his expense to stay up to date on Association affairs. The Chair, ADM Trost, issued a precept letter which established the Nominating Committee and its membership, and gave guidance on how it is to carry out its duties. It’s members are: VADM Michael Haskins, USN (Ret.) ’66-Chair; Capt Steve Andres, USNR (Ret.) ’67; Capt Randy Bogle, USN (Ret.) ’68; CDR mike Collins, USNR (Ret.) ’84; LCDR Sharon Disher, USNR (Ret.) ’80; VADM Frank Donovan, USN (Ret.) ’59; Maj Gen Leon Williams III, USMCR (Ret.) ’70; and CDR Steve Young, USNR ’84. If I might be of help to any of you in this regard, please let me know.
