 Dear Central Region Alumni:

As I pointed out in my other Newsletters, my duty to communicate with you is made clear by the Alumni Association Bylaws/Operating Manual:  “…being a Trustee of the Association involves serious responsibility...Of utmost importance is the responsibility to communicate effectively in explaining to our individual constituencies about issues, initiatives and activities of the Association.”

This Newsletter covers the Superintendent’s Remarks (VADM Rod Rempt ’66) made to the Board of Trustees meeting held on November 30, 2006.

§ All going well at USNA

§ Implementing new alcohol policy

§ Full YP utilization; buying new, larger YP’s

§ Planning new/rehabbed library

§ NAVSTA Annapolis is now a NAVSUPPORT Center

§ 24 new 44 foot sailboats are on order;  will get the first ones soon

§ Starting Chapel rehab; roof replacement done; dome repair next;  then, and addition to the Chapel

§ Academic program review is being acted on:

o       Reduced credit hour requirement for graduation (has crept up to 20 % more than other colleges)

o       Emphasize critical thinking, problem solving, and writing

o       Expand international language studies (adding Arabic, Farsi, and Chinese)

§ Completed human resource review for academics and started “tweaking” the system

§ Finishing physical mission review, i.e. club vs. varsity sports:

o       Women’s Lacrosse and Tennis made varsity

o       Created Club “A” category (e.g., men’s ice hockey, men’s rugby, and women’s rugby)

o       New club sports are under review

o       Validated graduation requirements

§ 2.4 million visitors to Yard each year

§ Gate 1 revamped to conform to 9/11 security and to handle visitors more efficiently and friendly

§ Wesley Brown Field House construction is underway;  will be the largest building in the Yard

§ King Hall renovation is underway; 27 month project with 8/08 completion; many midshipmen now eat in Dahlgren Hall.

§ His top 3 concerns are still valid:

o       Sexual Harassment concerns (asked alumni to let the process evolve)

o       Drug/alcohol.  Buried a midshipman this weekend in an alcohol-related car accident.  Only 0.5% of thousands of breathalyzer tests given to mids under 21 are over limit.  “Trying to stop binge drinking and I need your help.”  (Alumni shouldn’t give mids more alcohol than they are limited to.)

o       Honor. New process includes counseling at observer, company, battalion, and Brigade Honor Boards. Then to Commandant and Supe if necessary.

§ Funding:

o       Got $5.4 million extra from CNO to pay for labor costs

o       Gift funds: $40 million for Stadium renewal; $16.5 million for Brigade Sports Complex across the river

o       Top needs:  Center for Ethical Leadership; Brigade Sports Complex; Museum renovation; Athletic excellence; Academic Center; Admissions; Rugby fields; Chapel expansion; Others

§ He introduced the new Commandant, Capt Margaret D. Klein who arrived two days earlier from being the COS of a Carrier Air Wing in the middle east

§ Have a new Rhodes Scholar, the 8th in 3 years.

§ Thanked alumni for support

§ Requests alumni ticket donations for mids to go to Meinecke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC
