I attended the USNA Foundation (Athletics & Scholarships) Trustees spring meeting this past weekend.  This is the original Foundation established in the 1940s to financially support excellence in USNA athletic programs. Chet Gladchuk, the Athletic Director, spoke to us and I wanted to give you an update on his talk.  Please note his discussion of the new Athletic Excellence Fund (I would encourage you to earmark some of your USNA contributions to this very worthwhile fund). Some of Chet’s points include:

·       Navy ranks #1 in Division 1-A student athletes (academic performance);  the real goal of our athletic programs is to help produce excellent military leaders for our Navy and Marine Corps; physical readiness and teamwork are best forged through spirited athletic competition and demanding physical training

·       Athletic competition instills mental toughness, competitive and team spirit, aggressiveness in confrontation, the will to win and the determination to fight on, regardless of the odds

·       The number of varsity teams has grown from less than 20 in the late 80s to 30 currently; we also have 16 club and 19 intramural programs; USNA ranks near the top nationally in the number of varsity and club sports offered per student-athlete; over 37 percent of the Brigade are Division One varsity athletes (an extraordinary percentage)

·       To support this program private funds are needed; an Athletic Excellence Fund has been established for this purpose; alumni and friends of USNA are encouraged to earmark some of their USNA fund-giving to the Athletic Excellence Fund

·       We will win the N * again this year with victories over Army

·       We need to improve our basketball, soccer, and baseball programs

·       Our 2005 results have been spectacular in many varsity sports: Track 37-4; Crew 36-6; Rifle 13-0; Wrestling 12-3; Volleyball 21-9; Swimming 20-9; Squash 24-7

·       The NCAA will introduce a 12th game in the football schedule; OK with Navy because we have 3 open dates on our long schedule and need the activity

·       Negotiating with five Bowl organizations for next year; Navy football has drawn great interest

·       Signed a 5 year contract with College Sports TV to broadcast all Navy home games; will be available on broadband and Direct TV; troops overseas can tune in too

·       Good recruiting results for basketball; new coach seems to be turning program around

·       Great Brigade spirit—show up voluntarily for many sporting events

·       All Stadium renovations will be complete on September 1 this year

·       Many new facilities soon to be built, including new athletic center next to Wing 7 and indoor ice hockey & tennis facility across the Severn
