The Supe, VADM Rod Rempt ’66, spoke to the Chapter President’s Forum on May 5.  I sat in on that session at Alumni Hall and am reporting back on his talk. As usual VADM Rempt conveys a complete, credible, and very positive report on activities at the Naval Academy.  Here is his report:

VADM ROD REMPT ’66—SUPERINTENDENT USNA

·       Thanks alumni for helping USNA—very appreciative of the time and monetary gifts we give

·       Discussed mission and programs to meet the mission:

o       Morally: Character/Honor/Personal Integrity/Highest Ethical Standards.  Must build combat leaders; this is a “big time focus”; Officer Development System focuses on moral and character leadership with consolidated responsibilities throughout the Yard (Academics; Athletics; Bancroft Hall; etc.)

o       Mentally: Academics.  140 scholarships expected this year; #1 in NCAA Div 1-A academics; New Academic Program review underway to determine USN/USMC needs—covers curriculum, scheduling, process, faculty, and staff.

o       Physically: Athletics. 12 N* (N Star) wins this year; Men’s Lacrosse is Patriot League Champion; Women’s Lacrosse 20-4; will launch 1 year review of all athletic programs to determine if adjustments are needed.

·       2005 Service Assignments:  SWO 222; SWO nuke 29; Submarines 102; Pilot 250; NFO 85; USMC 208; Seals 21; Spec Ops 15; Medical 11; Other 20.

·       Have specific programs for professional development in many service communities, e.g., a flying program for Mids interested in Navy Air.

·       Some construction complete or nearing: Michelson, Chauvenet (7/05),  Robert Crown Sailing Center, Levy Center & Chapel (9/05); HVAC plant (Isabelle hurricane recovery); and Stadium (9/05).

·        Other construction planned: Wesley Brown Field House (180K sq ft) to break ground 3/06

·       New Mid’n 1/C lounge put into Hubbard Hall; will let Mids have beer in the Yard rather than driving after drinking

·       24/7 Supe concerns: Sexual misconduct; drug/alcohol abuse; honor violations.  2 % sexual assault record; female Mids grew from 6% to 17% since 1980; female mid attrition rate decreased from 34% to 24% during that time.  Drugs not a big problem (3 Mids let go last year). Responsible alcohol drinking is a goal.

·       Metrics for measuring USNA grad performance in the fleet/USMC is a major goal.

·       Concerned about rising SAT scores: “Are we letting in only geeks?”  Answer is that applicants keep improving with their SAT scores and we are getting the benefit of that.

·       Chapel needs refurbishment; using some government money but alumni money will be needed to do the entire job.

·       Feel free to contact him; he doesn’t promise to return all emails, but promises to read them: mailto:rempt@usna.edu
