This Leadership
Update was issued by George Watt ’73, President of the Alumni
Association. I am
publishing it verbatim along with the
certificate that he and ADM Trost, the Alumni Association
Chairman, gave to the Brigade.
His message follows:
“Yesterday we sent a certificate
to the Superintendent, signed by me and Admiral Trost, which will be read to
the Brigade in recognition of the founding of the United States Naval
Academy.
In lieu of a detailed Leadership Update, I thought it might be beneficial to
recognize that this month
marks the 159th anniversary of the
Founding of the U. S. Naval Academy. For additional information, I
recommend you see this month's edition of Shipmate magazine (page 44) and the
Superintendent's
Call regarding Alumni support (pages
4-5).
I look forward to seeing many of you over the next few weeks as we recognize
10 Years of President's Circle donor leadership; Homecoming 2004; Council of
Class Presidents Fall meeting; Athletic & Scholarship
Program Trustee meeting; the fall meeting
of the Foundation Board of Directors; the semi-annual meeting of
the Alumni Association Board of
Trustees; and, of course, Army-Navy 2004 in Philadelphia PA!
A reminder to all alumni leaders that we are still going through our annual
audit with KPMG. Once the audited financials have been reviewed with the
Joint Finance Committee, we will provide them to both boards for approval and
then get our FY2004 Consolidated Annual Report out in a timely manner.

The Chairman of the Board of
Trustees
and the
President of the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association
take pleasure in recognizing
The United States Naval Academy
Brigade of Midshipmen
October 10, 2004
On the Occasion of the 159th Anniversary
of the Founding
of the U. S. Naval Academy
Since its founding on October 10, 1845, when
Commander Franklin Buchanan assembled seven officers and civilian instructors
and sixty-six midshipmen, then read his orders, the United States Naval
Academy has produced leaders of great character for our nation during times
of peace and war.
As in Commander Buchanan’s day, Midshipmen
continue to “benefit from the subject of discipline” and continue
to realize that a good moral character is not only essential to their promotion,
it is the foundation of their leadership authority. So much has changed at
the site of old Fort Severn since that October day, yet so much remains the
same in the intentions and the mission of the naval school as envisioned by
Secretary Bancroft. We graduates are certainly the fortunate beneficiaries of
his and Buchanan’s work. Yet the real beneficiaries are the American
people. 71,100 men and women have graduated from the Naval Academy since its
founding. In the near future, you, too, will graduate and be leaders of great
character who will take our nation to greater heights.
Best wishes for the future from the 51,000
members of the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and all the members of
the Extended Brigade as you prepare to follow those who have gone before.
