I received an email from George Watt '73, the President of
the Alumni Association, asking for nominations for the 2004 Distinguished
Graduate Award. The deadline for nominations has been extended to year
end, and the procedures for nominating an individual are contained in
George's email which follows:

"This memorandum is being sent to all Chapter and Class Presidents
and is a "call to action." A copy is also being sent to USNA
Alumni Association Trustees; USNA Foundation Board of Directors; and the
Executive Committee of Athletic & Scholarship Program Trustees.
This past weekend, many of you had the opportunity to be part of the
Distinguished Graduate Awards events for 2003. Whether you were there
or not, I can assure you that the fifth installment of "DGA Weekend"
may have been the best yet. We are achieving all three objectives of this
premier Alumni Association program, namely:
- We recognize living graduates of the Naval Academy for a lifetime of
service
- We are advancing the Naval Academy and providing national exposure to
our alma mater through the example of these living graduates
- We provide living role models of the core values of the Navy and the
Naval Academy to members of today's Brigade of Midshipmen
By whatever measure you choose, this program is a real success story.
It also aligns nicely with the mission of the Naval Academy Alumni Association
in that it allows us to further the highest standards at the Naval Academy
and to promote the traditions and history of the Academy while binding
its alumni in support.
It highlights individuals who truly embody the mission of providing graduates
to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
In January, the DGA selection committee must go through the difficult
process of discernment and present to the Chairman of the Alumni Association
Board of Trustees, those select few graduates who will be recognized and
honored as "Distinguished Graduates" in 2004.
Admiral Kinnaird McKee, the Chairman of the DGA Selection Committee,
and I are now calling on you for your support. Despite the fact that there
are now over 50,500 living graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy, we have
received only two (2) new nominations for the 2004 selection committee!
This seems mathematically impossible and therefore we believe it to be
a matter of my not giving the program its proper emphasis this year. We
went out with a call for nominations in September in a formal package
sent to every class president and chapter president. We also announced
the call for nominations to all alumni in Shipmate some eight weeks ago.
This memo represents the Last Call for nominations. And, to make it easier
on you, Committee Chairman Admiral McKee has agreed to an extension of
this year's deadline to 31 December 2003.
For more information on the criteria and nomination form; please go to
our website at :

You may also call or email Ms. Andrea Campbell at the Alumni Association,
(410) 263-4448, ext 214 / email: andrea.campbell@usna.com. Please give
this your personal attention and please spread the word among your constituents.
Last year the committee reviewed over 30 (thirty) active nominations of
graduates who have served with distinction and who have lived a life of
commitment. The committee desires to have the same difficulty in exercising
its responsibility this year. Please assist us with additional nominations."
