The Supe and Commandant both asked for your help when I was in Annapolis for the Board of Trustees meeting last week.  They want to help as many Midshipmen from the Brigade as possible to attend the Houston Bowl game on December 30 when Navy plays Texas Tech.  They are paying for the Brigade’s tickets and helping to pay their transportation to Houston.  What they need is housing help for the Brigade and are counting on the alumni to help.  As Central Region alumni I hoped we can step to the plate and hit a home run for the Brigade.  The time is very short because the Brigade will soon leave for Christmas break and arrangements need to made soon.  Here’s how you can help, whether or not you are going to the game:

1.  Make room in your home (and neighbor’s homes) if you live in the Houston area; the Commandant told me that 4 mids per home would be great (but remember that these young men and women would be happy to get a piece of the rug and “bivouac” for a few nights.

2.  Rent an extra hotel room or share yours with some mids (remember that mids are of both genders so sleeping accommodations must be separate—again, quite a few mids could occupy a room).  Two hotels are giving USNA rates of only $85 per night.

3.  Contribute the cost of a hotel room to some mids.

If you volunteer, the mids you sponsor will need to be picked up and returned to the airport (if they’re not driving there), driven into Houston for the pep rally event in late PM on December 29, and driven to Reliant Stadium by noon on game day for military formation. Of course, some meals would be nice too, and I’m sure you’d love seeing these fine young men and women.  If you are paired with some midshipmen, they will contact you and then you can make detailed arrangements directly with them.

Here’s how you can participate:

1. Phone or email the Commandant’s office (Captain Joe Leidig ’78) and give them your offer of help (e.g., home, hotel, number of mids, and your name/address/phone). Contact LT Mike Morgan at morganm@usna.edu or Laurie Wells at wells@usna.edu—or call them at (410) 293-3875.

2.  Go to the Alumni Association web site (www.usna.com), click on “Navy Goes To The Bowl - Looking For Families To Host Midshipmen”.  Then complete the form and send it to Alumni House.  This method will take a bit longer, so I’d suggest going straight to number 1 above.

There is information on special hotel rates near Reliant Stadium and on discount prices for the tickets on the Athletic Dept’s web site: www.navysports.com.  Remember to also look at the Alumni Association web site for special packages to the game: www.usna.com

Thanks for your support.  Please give this Newsletter special and quick routing throughout your Chapters and to all your alumni friends.  Let’s support the Brigade, and let’s          BEAT TEXAS TECH!!!
